The programme:

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Jaap Lengkeek

Behind the words ‘Dr Livingstone I presume’   lies a whole world of explorers. These adventurers have written a lot about their tours, the routes, territories, peoples, their cultures and exotic customs. What was said is not always entirely reliable and often distorted by a Western and 19th century view.
By organizing trips in the footsteps of explorers, various goals are pursued:
  • a combination of historical research into what is left in the areas and cultures after the voyages of discovery and what has changed
  • enriching the tourist experience with the stories and historical knowledge
  • by attaching importance to the history local cultures participate in the preservation of material and intangible heritage.

Video documentary Framing the other

Made by Ilja Kok and Willem Timmers (Wageningen University/NHTV Breda).

In this documentary we follow a Dutch tour group that travels to a village of the Ethiopian Mursi. The Mursi are increasingly visited by tourists. Tourists understand little of the culture and customs. The Mursi are for them mainly curious sights, with their dishes in their lip and painted faces. The Mursi don’t really understand what these tourists are coming to do. The documentary shows that both cultures can gain a lot of profit when tourists are more aware of the local history, traditions and rituals.
The documentary, broadcast by the VPRO, will give rise to an interesting discussion.
