Anke Erps flew to Johannesburg for a city trip. Read what’s going on in a short time in South Africa’s largest city.
A long weekend to Johannesburg… No, you can’t! On the contrary. The time was short but seeing, doing and experiencing, it was a fact!
First of all, an overwhelming experience; board the largest passenger jet, the Airbus A380-800. Arriving in Jozi I travelled to the city with the Gautrain, a very relaxed way of travelling without traffic jams. Then made a city walk (Newtown) and been at the house of Nelson Mandela where he died. Had lunch in new indoor marketplaces in Ferreistown & Braamfontein and tasted the nightlife of Maboneng Precinct. And get on the bike for the monthly ‘Critical Mass Bike Ride’, an event where you ride the streets of Johannesburg with the locals.
Visited the Apartheid Museum, Contitution Hill, Cradle of Humankind and the Maropeng visitor centre. In Soweto to a cup of tea with cookies with a host family. Packed a Drumbeat festival, where there was a lot of venues, and attended a sunday morning church service with some 5,000 visitors, fascinating!
A special and bustling city that is well worth a visit. Johannesburg has developed very positively over the years. And still! Johannesburg City is recommended as a supplement to a trip to South Africa.
I enjoyed it and it was very instructive.
