Best,
Let me repeat our first impressions: overwhelming natural beauty, program with great variety, an absolute must, wonderful trip. Our trip was actually the combination of a city trip Kuala Lumpur (recommended, definitely do it!) with a trip through Malaysian Borneo ( Sarawak and Sabah ).
We were looking for nature, adventure, authenticity, contact with the local population and we were able to experience all of that in abundance. We will not go over the entire program because it still has to remain exciting for everyone… Below are some personal impressions of a number of highlights.
Bako National Park : Probiscus monkeys, beautiful walks, impressive nature. Homestay in Longhouse was superb. Basic but very friendly and cordial people. The owner's sister was a fantastic cook and we enjoyed her cooking very much. The activities were also very exciting! An authentic piece of Borneo culture, we can recommend it to everyone! We must add that the local guide (from Kuching) was a very nice guy. Not to forget the rice whiskey…
Ascent of Mount Kinabalu (4,095m): all five of us have reached the top! At the ascent on the first day and then to the top the next morning we were very lucky because the weather was very nice. We had a very nice view at the top but were also partly above the clouds (no sunrise seen due to upcoming clouds). Also the facilities in Laban Rata were perfect! Really nice mountain lodge with great food. The descent to Laban Rata was again excellent, but then it turned out that the clouds were full of rain… The further descent we did in a real deluge; it was like walking in the middle of a mountain river.
We are proud of our achievement because it remains a serious sporting challenge and adventure (and requires a good physical condition). The Shangri La was very welcome to rest our sore muscles.
Encounters with the orangutans in Semenggoh and Sepilok but also in the wild: a real experience and at the same time very funny. Kinebatangan Wetlands : beautifully situated lodge, unique river safaris, fireflies, magnificent starry skies. In addition, we also went diving, snorkeling, chilling, enjoying with our family and so much more.
In short: friendly people with a nice (food) culture. Excellent infrastructure, reliable and punctual flights, flawless organization on site. Malaysia (a predominantly Muslim country by the way) has conquered our hearts!
Thanks and regards,
