Salt pans and Baobab trees
Botswana's landscape is becoming increasingly drier towards the south. The Kalahari Desert covers much of the country here. Makgadikgadi Pans is located in the northern part of the Kalahari and belongs to one of the most fascinating areas of Botswana. With an abundance of rain, the water flows from the Okavango Delta to here, but usually the landscape consists of dry salt pans, Makgadikgadi and Nxai. Makgadikgadi literally means lifeless land, but nothing could be further from the truth. After the rainy season you will see thousands of flamingos and many other bird species. Wildebeest and zebras move across the plain without a horizon, in search of fresh water. Nxai Pan is famous for its 'Baines', giant Baobab trees that you can see from a long distance.
