Rainforest with chimpanzees, forest elephants and leopards
Korup National Park, located in western Cameroon, is considered the most beautiful in the country. The rainforest, consisting of ebony trees, kola trees and many palm species, was created about thirty million years ago and is therefore one of the oldest in Africa. For hikers and botanists, Korup is ideal for its many marked trails, including a botanical learning path, accessible via a one hundred and twenty-metre long suspension bridge over the River Mana. The World Wildlife Fund has started a project to preserve this unique primeval forest for the future, while at the same time trying to ensure the existence of the indigenous (pygmy) population. It, in turn, is encouraged to breed fish and other edible animals, thereby reducing poaching and increasing the chances of survival of, among others, the rare forest elephant. You can also see chimpanzees, leopards, forest baboons, fringe monkeys, grey red-tailed parrots, the grey-necked rock whoops and kingfishers. The best time to visit Korup runs from November to May (it is recommended to travel between December and March, the driest time). Korup belongs to the areas in Cameroon where the most rain falls. As a result, there is an extremely humid heat all year round.
