To the rim of an active volcano
Ferocious volcanoes and lava flows, through centuries of brutal volcanic violence, caused the Comoros to rise from the sea. Numerous collapsed calderas, crater lakes and basalt formations bear witness to this savage past, but today the landscape looks peaceful. On all the islands of the Union of Comoros there are plenty of hiking opportunities, to enjoy this scenic beauty full of panoramic views. Hike to Lake Salé or the Dragon's Back, and settle down for a picnic lunch in an idyllic spot. The perfect combination of exercise and relaxation.
Active volcano
The silhouette of Grande Comore is dominated by Karthala Volcano (2,361m), the island's only active volcano. There are several approach routes to the crater rim, and it is even possible to travel much of the route by 4WD. As you approach the summit, the view becomes more expansive: to the horizon you see nothing but the blue ocean. It highlights how relatively small the island is, a hidden gem strewn in the vast ocean. Once on the crater rim, your attention shifts to the geology of Comoros: here you will have spectacular views of a complex of several calderas.
Decide how light or just how challenging the hike may become. Do you have a lot of time? Then take a multi-day trek, with camping nights in the middle of nature. You will walk accompanied by a private guide, with only your daypack as your luggage.
