Lake Langano, Lake Abiyata and Lake Shala
These are the three most popular of the seven lakes that Ethiopia is rich in. They are all located in the Rift Valley or Great Rift, the crack in the earth's crust that runs from Lebanon under the Mediterranean to Africa and splits into an eastern and western branch. The first leads via Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania to Lake Malawi, the second via Sudan and Uganda to Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. The water of the Langanomeer is pink-brown in color by the volcanic origin. The lake is lined with acacia trees and attracts many addis residents who enjoy beach, nature and water sports opportunities here on weekends, although the latter are limited. The blue Abyita Lake is shallow, so there are many birds such as pelicans and other fish eaters. Lake Shala is located at the bottom of a 250 meter deep volcanic crater and is silver in color due to the many sulphur in the bottom. Abiyata and Shala together form a national park.
Lake Awassa
Lake Awassa is known for its colorful fish market, which takes place every morning.
