On safari at the foot of Kilimanjaro
Amboseli National Reserve is located on the border with Tanzania, at the foot of 'The Roof of Africa', the majestic Kilimanjaro. The landscape is characterized by a flat savannah, overgrown with acacia's. There is a shallow lake where flamingos and pelicans live. In the dry era, when the lake falls dry, the bottom of the lake consists of volcanic ash. The name of the park, Amboseli, means 'salty substance' in the language of the Masai, referring to the ash. In the central part of the park are marshes, fed by underground rivers and meltwater of Kilimanjaro. Around these marshes you will find most of the animals. With great regularity you can see large herds of elephants here, along the waterfront, in the mud and bathing. A beautiful sight with Kilimanjaro in the background. A unique picture! Not only the large animals such as elephants and rhinos can be found here, also a large variety of rare and colorful birds live in the park. Your guide will be happy to tell you all about the behaviour of the animals that live here.
