Extreme scenery for an intense experience
With imposing landscapes of dunes, rocks, gorges and oases, the Sahara is a place of salutary tranquility and special surprises.
So you can enjoy the sunset over the dunes on the back of a dromedary, you can drive into the vast emptiness by 4WD.
Just get out somewhere, turn off the engine, and listen....
It is so quiet that the smallest sounds are suddenly audible.
With your ear near the sand, you can even hear how grains of sand are moved by the wind, and if there really is no breeze, you can hear your own heartbeat.
What an extreme landscape, where the smallest stimuli become intense. Where the world can't find you ...
Endless sand dunes and desert peoples
Near M'hamid are the most beautiful sand dunes in southern Morocco. This is truly an 'ocean of dunes', of which the Chegaga dunes are the largest, tallest and most beautiful. It is a game of colors and shapes. As are the red sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, which means as much as "moving mass of sand. The wind pushes the sand high, creating dunes in different places. Dunes as far as you can see: an overwhelming experience! After the beautiful sunset you can enjoy the silence of the desert under a fantastic starry sky. How extraordinary that various peoples call this extremely arid landscape home.
Saharan people include the Bounou Berbers, the Ouled Driss Arabs and Jews. Especially the Bounou Berbers still live according to the old traditions. There are permanent villages but also settlements and tent camps of (semi)nomadic families.
Western Sahara
Western Sahara is an area of sand and rock. Unique is the tropical Boujdour region where the desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. A well-known and very striking place here is Dakhla, the most tropical city in Morocco, located on a peninsula more than 30 km long. This huge headland creates a large lagoon with flat water that is quite shallow in many places, a mecca for kitesurfers and windsurfers.
