UNESCO World Heritage Site
Ilha de Moçambique has a rich history. It is a small island, where clearly the many cultural influences that have shaped Mozambique are visible. It was an important center for trade in slaves, spices and gold, and served as a stopping point for the Portuguese trade route to India. The dilapidated state of the once magnificent architecture has led the United Nations to declare the northern part of Ilha mozambique a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historical buildings include fortifications, churches and chapels. The former capital Stone Town is the oldest European settlement in eastern Africa with the oldest European-owned building in the Southern Hemisphere!
