The world-famous sand dunes of Sossusvlei
One of the highlights of visiting Namibia is the vast sprawling Namib Naukluft Park. The Naukluft mountains, together with the sand dunes at Sossusvlei, are housed in one park, the Namib-Naukluftpark. Sossusvlei is the most famous part of the park. It is a dune pan, rarely filled with water. The unreal desert landscape of Sossusvlei is home to the highest sand dunes, apricot-coloured, in the world. At sunrise, the soft light colours the dunes and sand deep red and sat on top of a dune, the view of the sand sea is overwhelming. In this bizarre setting, you can take a walk toDeadvlei,a nearby dune pan where dead trees on a thin salt crust form a strange backdrop.
The Sesriem Canyon
Near Sossusvlei lies the small but impressive Sesriem Canyon. The Tsauchab River has carved out a 30-metre-deep and 1-kilometer-long gorge.
