Swakopmund is a German-speaking city on the coast. The cozy town was founded in 1892 and served as the main port to supply the German colony. German street names, konditoreien, half-timbered houses and many inhabitants from Germany. In the centre there are some colonial buildings to admire including the station building. Inland, you can drive the famous Welwitschia route. This is the place where the peculiar Welwitschia Mirabilis occurs. A miraculous plant, some of which have grown to 1,500 years old. South of Swakopmund is the village of Walvis Bay,on a lagoon where you can see thousands of flamingos and pelicans.
Sea lions at Cape Cross
To the north is Cape Cross, the place where the Portuguese navigator Diego Cao was the first European to set foot on land. On the coast and in the water you will find hundreds of sea lions here. The quantity, the noise and the smell will stay with you for a few more days.
