Mountain gorillas in Rwanda
In Africa there are four national parks, where the rare mountain gorilla occurs. One in Rwanda, one in Congo DRC and two in Uganda. In Rwanda, this is the Parc National des Volcans, named after six volcanoes of the Virunga mountain range on the border with Uganda and Congo. In clear weather, you can observe the impressive Virunga volcanoes from afar. On the flanks of these volcanoes lies tropical mountain rainforest, home to silver-black mountain gorillas, for many travellers the reason to travel to Rwanda. It is on the flanks of the Virungas that Dian Fossey did her years of studying the behavior of the almost extinct mountain gorillas. Since the release of the film 'Gorillas in the Mist', the whole world has known these peaceful great apes. Accompanied by expert guides, you will search for the mountain gorillas on foot. An unforgettable but sometimes arduous trip where you have to walk two to ten hours. In addition to gorillas, you can visit the "golden monkey", another rare primate species, accompanied by guides. Parc National des Volcans is of course also a fantastic destination for hikers. It is possible to climb several of the volcanoes in the park. The flanks of the volcanoes are overgrown with fairy-tale high-mountain vegetation including giant lobelias, hanging mosses and senecios.
