Panoramic route through beautiful valley
Little Karoo - or Little Karoo, the Land of Great Thirst - is a remarkable valley sandwiched between several mountain ranges. You are here in the rain shadow of the surrounding mountains: it is palpably and visibly drier, the vegetation is different. For example, a lot of lavender grows and blooms here, even more striking are the very numerous succulents such as Aloe varieties. As many as 200 species of succulents are endemic to this region! Route 63 runs parallel to the Garden Route but it is a lot quieter here. It is also 350 magnificent kilometers, beginning and ending with spectacular passes that provide access to the valley. At times you will drive in a wondrous rocky landscape with winding roads and steep slopes, at other times the landscape opens up to a vast plain. Where the world can't find you...
Port, muscatel and ostrich farms
Along the way, you will pass wineries, which grow different grape varieties than in the Cape wine countries: a lot of port, muscatel and brandy is bottled here. The peaceful Calitzdorp bears the title "Port Capital of South Africa" with pride, as the port from this place is of high quality. The charming town of Oudtshoorn is known for its ostrich farms, which can usually be visited. This is an entertaining and educational outing. But while you are here, be sure to visit the Cango Caves, the historic drop De Rust and take a trip over the hairpin bends of the Swartberg Pass.
