Long unspoiled coastline
The Wild Coast, formerly known as the Transkei, is a 250km stretch of coast between East London and the border with KwaZulu Natal. The name refers to the rugged cliffs and raging surf, but those who look further will also find sheltered bays and pristine beaches. That combination makes The Wild Coast an ideal destination for both peace-seekers and active travelers. There are wonderful hiking trails - from short walks to multi-day treks - and for experienced surfers, there are stunning and challenging locations to conquer the waves. The famous rock formation"The hole in the wall" is a picturesque geological picture book. The spot is surrounded by stories of the Xhosa: they see the natural arch as a gateway to the world of their ancestors, and the sound of waves crashing violently on the rocks is said to be the cry of a mystical sea people. The site is also the starting point for diving expeditions around the"sardine run," an underwater migration spectacle. Where the world can't find you....
The land of the Xhosa
On road trips, you will navigate through the land of the Xhosa. Rolling green hills dotted with brightly colored rondavels show glimpses of an authentic culture, far removed from modern South African life! The region is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, who was born and raised in the village of Mvezo. In nearby Mthatha, no less than three museums are dedicated to the life, culture and heritage of this legendary leader.
