A 15-day roundtrip spread across the three islands of Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan is the recipe for a true immersion in the fascinating history, culture and nature of Comoros.
The medina and the Sultan's palace
On the islands of Grande Comore and Anjouan, you will travel back to the time of the ancient sultanates. Behind monumental gates, explore royal palaces, mosques, mausoleums and tombs. Sometimes no more than ruins, but the Ujumbé Palace in Mutsamudu, among others, is still in magnificent condition. Explore the labyrinth of narrow alleys and stairs in the Itsandra medina and the medina of Mutsamudu, where historic buildings, richly decorated wooden doors and numerous details take you back to the 15th century.
Crater lakes and glowing lava
Waves crashing on jagged lava rocks, dense vegetation interrupted by lava fields, a landscape full of collapsed craters, everything is a reminder of the volcanic origins of the Comoros archipelago. On hikes and day trips, you will see the most beautiful crater lakes such as Lake Dzialandzé, a picturesque location that invites a picnic lunch. Most challenging is the ascent of the active volcano Karthala (2,361m), where magma glows deep in the crater.
Mohéli National Park
How will you divide your time among the various ecosystems of Mohéli National Park? At least take a walk through the rainforest in search of the endemic lemurs and bats, and set aside a day for a boat trip to the uninhabited islands, snorkeling and swimming. How about an introductory dive to see the coral reefs even closer, a trip by kayak through the mangrove forests, or an exciting excursion in the evening or at night in search of sea turtles that come to lay their eggs on land? After each activity, it's great to come home to your beautiful lodge by the sea, to dream away with a cocktail in hand by the lapping water....
Tips & Tops Round trip Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan:
- No long travel distances, only private transfers and three short domestic flights
- Tours of the towns of Moroni, Iconi, Mutsamudu and Domoni in search of traces of the ancient sultan dynasties
- Visit the village of Singani, which in 1977 was almost completely swallowed by a lava flow coming from the Karthala volcano
- On Mohéli, take a day excursion at sea and to several uninhabited islands, with plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Enjoy a freshly prepared, tropical lunch on one of the islands
- Few dive sites are as beautiful as the coral reefs, sandbanks and lagoons of Mohéli National Park. Even very experienced divers will be delighted by the healthy state of the reefs, and the great diversity. The diving school also offers PADI courses
- During your hike through the rainforest, you will look for mongoose lemurs and Comoros butterflies, and unusual vegetation such as orchids, epiphytes, ferns, black pepper and vanilla
- Take a unique excursion (with overnight in simple accommodation) to the beach at Itsamia, home to tens of thousands of sea turtles each year
- Two-day trek to the crater rim of the active Karthala volcano. Optionally, it is possible to take a lighter, one-day hike or car trip to the volcano
- During a culture and cooking workshop you will not only learn about local traditions and the culinary application of local products, but you will also really get to know the exceptionally friendly people
- Many options to expand the trip with more rest days, more cultural activities or tours in nature
- It is possible to combine this trip with a trip through Kenya, Madagascar or Mayotte. Mayotte belongs to the Comoros archipelago, and is an overseas French department
