Simien, Danakil and Lalibela are the three absolute highlights of an Ethiopia trip. Get ready for a special trip

Simien, Danakil and Lalibela

Walking to 4200 meters altitude

Your first highlight (literally) is the Simien Mountains. The mountain range has a rich animal life: Gelada baboons, special bird species, the Walia Ibex, the Simien wolf and some leopards. You walk to 4200 meters altitude from where you have a beautiful view over the area. In good weather you can see the Ras Dashen, the highest peak at a whopping 4624 meters altitude.

Volcanic landscape

Then you travel to the lowest point of Ethiopia, the Danakil Depression, 120 meters below sea level. Marvel at the fascinating, otherworldly and apocalyptic landscape made up of active volcanoes, salt pans and sulfur fields. The warmth you feel here is partly because the lava flows right underground here. A walk to the Erta Ale volcano, Ethiopia's most active volcano, completes this special experience!

Lalibela rock churches

The last destination of this trip is Lalibela. With its eleven world famous rock churches one of the biggest tourist attractions of Ethiopia. The churches have been carved out of volcanic stone. First of all, the circumference was carved in the depths and then from the outside out to inside the interior. Some churches are completely detached from the surrounding rock and are surrounded by a deep trench. Underground corridors connect the churches.

Tips & Tops from Simien, Danakil & Lalibela:

  • During this trip, a visit to the Blue Nile falls is also included. Over hundreds of meters the water pours down more than 40 meters!
  • The town of Axum in northern Ethiopia is the oldest city in the country and is also considered a 'Holy City'. This impressive city is full of ruins of ancient palaces, tombstones and giant granite obelisks.
  • The Simien Mountains are also called Africa's Grand Canyon. She owes this name mainly to the spectacular views and the rocks that sometimes go down steeply for up to 1.5 kilometres.
  • The myth goes that angels helped build the rock churches in Lalibela. This incredible complex has been created in just 25 years time. Something that has been an unreal achievement for that time to build this without tools.
  • The trip concludes with a traditional farewell dinner at Addis Abeda
  • This trip can be offered in different classes
  • Sleep outside under the stars in the Danakil Depression, a spectacular experience!
