Steep mountains and forested gorges
In the northwestern part of Zimbabwe, overlooking the mighty Zambezi Valley and Lake Kariba is located Chizazira National Park. It is one of the country's most remote and least visited national parks and features stunning scenery, set on steep mountains of the Zambezi that are deeply furrowed with densely forested gorges. On the northeastern edge of the park you will find Tundazi, a spectacularly tall mountain that, according to local legend, is home to the river god Nyaminyami, a giant snake.
Non-hunting reserve full of wildlife
The park's name comes from the Batonga word "chijalila," which means as much as "great barrier" and refers to the Zambezi escarpment, of which Chizarira's rugged terrain is a part. Since 1938, Chizazira has been a no-hunting reserve. In this beautiful remote game reserve, you will experience wild, untouched flora and fauna, and it is blessed with magnificent gorges, plateaus and floodplains.
Spectacular bird life
Once a haven for the endangered black rhino, Chizarira has suffered years of poaching and wildlife populations are not as dense as in other Zambezi parks. However, the bird life is spectacular - no fewer than 400 of Zimbabwe's 580 bird species are found here - including the rare Angola pitta, Livingstone flycatcher and Taita falcon. As such, this park offers an unforgettable wilderness experience for hikers, birdwatchers and nature lovers in general.
