BASE 'A'

If weather conditions permit, you can land per zodiac at Base 'A', the British secret base that was in use between 1944 and 1962. Initially Base 'A' had a military function, later scientific research was carried out here. The abandoned base was restored many years later, and decorated as a museum. It belongs to one of the scarce Historic Sites and Monuments that the Antarctic Schierieland is rich.

The area is intensely beautiful, numerous donkey penguins and south pole chickens live around the base. If the weather is clear, calm, this almost looks like a winter's paradise. However, the simplicity of Base 'A' also gives an impression of the harsh living conditions under which soldiers and scientific pioneers had to carry out their work. Imagine: Antarctic winters, polar nights, violent storms, and months of living in isolation...

GREETINGS FROM ANTARCTICA!

The museum also serves as a post office, the southernmost post office in the world. Write your mail aboard the cruise ship, and send it from the Antarctic Peninsula! The cards and envelopes are stamped with care.
