Walking and standing still
The colors, the smells. The flavors and the sound. India is more than a landmark. India is an experience. It is not made by the sight of a temple or the sight of a turban. The experience comes on a journey. Walking across the countryside, past houses in pastel hues, green rice paddies and rolling hills. Wherever people are, you will be greeted with a friendly 'namasté'.Walking through the city, past fragrant carts of samosa vendors and the steaming pots of chai donors. Right through the sound of noisy market traders. Through the low tones of the mantras from the temples through to the high flute concert of the birds, deep in the Indian jungle. Or to the whizzing silence of the Ladakh Mountains. Walking is a perfect way to experience India. Walking, but especially occasionally pausing. To participate in local life. To enjoy a chai masala by the side of the road. Stand still for a meeting in rural Pradesh. Or hang out at the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. To help with baking chapatis for the homeless, and so to taste the land yourself.
