The equator runs right through Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, so you will always enjoy tropical sunshine. The climate makes it a unique landscape where, unlike in the rest of Indonesia, you won't find volcanoes, but you will find ancient forests with towering trees that are home to some of the world's most unusual animal species.

It is a paradise for nature lovers. For example, orangutans live in the national parks of Tanjung Puting, Kayan Mentarang and Danau Sentarum but also the endemic proboscis monkeys, proboscis monkeys, gibbons, sun bears numerous bird species have found their home here.

Kalimantan is also called "the island of a thousand rivers. Take a beautiful boat ride on the pristine Sungai Mahakam River and look for animals like hornbills and crocodiles on the bank along the way and visit the floating market of Benjarmasin, also called the "Venice of Asia," where locals trade food from small boats.

In the interior live the original inhabitants of Kalimantan, the Dayak, who live by the principle that everything has a soul and worship spirits and animals. Get to know their culture while visiting the traditional longhouse in Tanjung Isuy village.
