SPORTING CHALLENGE
More than 400 volcanoes control the image of the Indonesian islands. Take on the challenge and climb to the top. Preferably leave in the middle of the night, so you reach the top at sunrise. As the fog slowly clears, an enchantingly beautiful landscape appears. You will feel the king too rich as you stand on the crater rim, sob the penetrating sulphur air and are treated to spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
HOUSE OF THE GODS
The most notorious volcano is Mount Krakatau. The devastating eruption in 1883 is still etched in many people's memories. The volcano is still one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Another unmissable volcano is Mount Rinjani,Indonesia's tallest, which dominates northern Lombok. On Java, the bright green landscape of rice paddies is interspersed with dry lunar landscapes and simmering craters from which occasional plumes of smoke come out. The bizarre scenery aroundBromo has something extraterrestrial, while the azure crater lake of ijen volcano gives a strong contrast to its surroundings.
Mountains and volcanoes in Bali are considered the 'house of the gods' of which Mount Agung is the holy mother mountain. At the foot of the volcano stands the sacred temple Besakih, one of the important mother temples of the island. The more than 200 religious structures are built in layers against the mountain and partly overgrown by plants and vegetation. An impressive whole.
