Vast river area in the far south
Nowhere is the Mekong River as wide as just north of the border with Cambodia. From shore to shore the distance is 14 kilometers, and this vast area is dotted with countless islands. Most are uninhabited, there are hardly any roads. Even electricity is not a matter of course here. The rhythm of life slows down to the speed of a bike, a tuktuk, a boat or a pair of slippers.
WATER BUFFALOES ON THE BEACH
Actually, you don't have to do much more here than look around, relax, have a bite to eat, laze in a hammock. The chance encounter with a local resident and the chat with a fisherman brings you close to the people. A beach holiday without the sea, but the Mekong River is everywhere. The beaches and banks sometimes share with water buffaloes, which hang out in the shade for a while.
IRRAWADDY DOLPHINS
The water landscapes of Si Phan Don are nothing short of picturesque. A boat ride through the labyrinth is a visual feast, your camera is working overtime. Continue to scan the surface of the water, looking for signs that dolphins are swimming. The rare Irrawaddy dolphin is found in this part of the Mekong, and with any luck you'll see the distinctive stubby nose rise above the water.
