Reserve full of primordial anetans
The fact that the nature reserve from Sandakan is easily accessible is a bonus. First, make an extensive stop at special projects near the entrance. It's the perfect preparation for your jungle trek!
Orangutans and Malay bears
In a demarcated stretch of rainforest is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a shelter for young, orphaned orangutans. The larger animals live in freedom, but from a viewing platform you can see how they are fed daily. It's exciting whether and so well, how many orangutans come at the extra meal. These are intense moments when the first animals – voluntarily and without fear – approach, and are observed without any worries.
About 40 Malaysian bears are being cared for at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Here too, the ultimate goal is to give the animals back their complete freedom, in a forest where their chances of survival are greatest. Finally, you can visit the Sandakan Rainforest Discovery Centre. Learn everything you didn't know about the rainforest, and see the forest from a different perspective from the walkways of the canopy walk.
Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve
Then it's time for the real experience. Beautiful routes traverse different types of rainforest in the Forest Reserve. The chance of seeing orangutans here is greater than in many other forests on Borneo. A very varied migration ends in a mangrove forest. From the elevated boardwalk you can search here for nose monkeys. Will you return to the starting point on foot the next day? Or are you getting in the boat? You'll be back in Sandakan in an hour.
