Travelling by water
From north to south, the mighty River Irrewaddy traverses the landscape. In the far north it is still a ferocious stream, fed by meltwater from the Himalayas. Other rivers, such as the Chindwin River, flow into the Irrewaddy, which is becoming wider and quieter. The 'Mother River' is then well navigable, and is therefore the main lifeblood of Myanmar.
A luxury saloon boat is your home during the journey through the river landscape. British river steamers were the model for several cruise ships, which are equipped with all the comforts. The rooms are attractively decorated and very comfortable, here you are at home for the duration of the cruise. However, most of the time you will spend on the outside deck, where alternating scenes glide past. Misty mountains in the background, the striking silhouettes of countless stupas, villages along the shore and fishermen on the water... Sit back with a drink in hand. You don't have to do anything but watch, observe, enjoy.
Most cruise ships sail from Bagan to Mandalay in three or four days and vice versa. These historic cities tell the story of ancient Burmese kingdoms, the flowering of Buddhism, the arrival of traders from Europe and surrounding countries, the colonial times. The boat docks regularly, so you can discover everything up close. Then you will experience the smells and sounds of everyday life, the markets, crowds in the streets, or just the peace in a pagoda or monastery.
It is possible to make a longer cruise. The Irrewaddy is sailed from Yangon to Bhamo,and the Chindwin River to Paung Pyin. So far upstream you will encounter very few tourists, you will discover a very authentic part of Myanmar.
Whichever cruise you choose, the comfort of the saloon boat awaits at the end of the day. During each sunset, the silence descends over the river. What remains are the chirping waterfowl and the rippling water.
