In the footsteps of Buddha
In front of the exact spot where Siddhartha Gautama Buddha was born in 623 BC, there is a long line of waiting. A gentle hum rises from the crowd: believers preach their prayers. You too are welcome in the queue, but are certainly not the first to pay tribute to Buddha. Lumbini has been a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists since well before our era.
Today, Lumbini is even a Unesco World Heritage Site. Buddhists from all over the world come together in the sacred garden. In addition to the Maya Devi temple built on the site where Buddha was born, you will also find the Bodhi tree here. His low-hanging branches containing a jumble of prayer flags cast a shadow on the spot where Buddha meditated.
Lumbini is not just a place to enjoy the serene tranquility. It is also a nice starting point for a bike tour of the region. There are 62 archaeological sites around Lumbini. These ancient remains blend effortlessly with all the new temples and golden stupas, donated by Buddhist communities from all over the world.
