Emerald lagoons and underground rivers
The color palette of the Palawan archipelago is intense, the sea coloring from deep blue and azure to emerald green. The water houses extraordinary treasures that can only be found from or in the water, in a setting reminiscent of scenes from Jurassic Park. Cruise by boat to the hidden lagoons around El Nido such as Twin Lagoon and Kayangan Lake, enclosed by razor-sharp karst formations. Explore idyllic beaches, underground rivers and caves by canoe, paddle board or swim. The longest underground river in the world is hidden near Puerto Princesa, in Saint Paul's Bay. Deep below the karst mountains, the sound of paddles echoing in the water, the guide almost whispering, most impressive are the moments when you just listen to the river.
Coral reefs and shipwrecks
Life underwater is equally impressive. Visibility is particularly good outside the rainy season - from December to March. Enjoy the many colors of the coral reef as you snorkel in the crystal clear waters. For experienced divers, Coron is a world-class destination because of its many shipwrecks at various depths. Apo Reef Natural Park is an extensive contiguous coral reef of exceptional quality. Look out for schools of barracudas, rays and sea turtles; if you're lucky you'll even see the shy dugong.
Jungle
Don't forget to explore the islands inland. Palawan's rainforest is rich in biodiversity, with many endemic species such as the Palawan pangolin and the exuberant Palawan peacock pheasant. Take a bike ride, a short hike od a multi-day trek for an immersion in Palawan's nature.
