Rustic villages between rice paddies and vegetable fields
Water flows audibly through the irrigation channels, ducks bobbing in the calm waters of small rivers and pools. It's wonderfully quiet in the Mai Chau Valley. Rustic villages lie between the rice paddies and vegetable fields, where the White Thai and the Muonglive. As you pass on foot or on the bike, people greet you kindly. Thanks to a successful community-based tourism project, the population in the valley is familiar with visitors from faraway countries.
The setting is idyllic. Your route can lead to a local market, or a few caves and waterfalls. You can also take part in an ecotour here, and learn about the work on the farm. Fishermen will be happy to teach you to cast the round fishing net into the rich fishing waters. In the background are the mountains and forests of the Pu Luong nature reserve. Lovely for a walk in the shadow of a tropical forest, and to look for all kinds of animals. In the spring there are a remarkable number of butterflies here!
For a meal, you can visit a local restaurant. The specialties of the region include bamboo-cooked rice, salad with banana tree flowers, freshwater snails and vegetables from the forest. What will never be missing here is a decanter of locally produced rice wine.
