Authentic Caribbean atmosphere and carnival

In addition to the awe-inspiring nature, there is a lot to see in Dominica also plenty of culture to discover. Along the jagged coastline are rustic, charming villages. In the picturesque capital Roseau , built on the site of an old Indian village, you can taste the authentic Caribbean atmosphere and explore the city on foot from the old market square, through the waterfront. Be sure to meet the last descendants of the Kalinago tribe, the original inhabitants of the Caribbean, or learn more about the way of life of the local Rastafas, where love, nature and reggae take center stage. As in many islands, you can eat delicious fish that tastes best here paired with a glass of local rum.

Carnival is celebrated in Dominica in February starting with J'Ouvert, a Bohemian parade of costumes, drums and bouyon music that begins in the early hours of Monday morning. Roseau is where the largest parades are attended, but Portsmouth and villages like St Joseph, Calibishie and Grand Bay also host their own celebrations. During your trip, enjoy one of the Caribbean's most authentic carnivals with African-inspired sensay and stilt dancers, drumming and horn blowing, Caribbean steel pan and Creole jing ping, cadence and bouyon music genres.
