Rugged volcanic landscapes
Dominica is a volcanic island that has as many as nine active volcanoes. The highest volcano is Morne Diablotins, but Morne Watt is the most active volcano although the last eruption was more than 20 years ago. If you are an experienced hiker, you can take an impressive hike through the rugged landscape to the top of Morne Diablotins. That it is a volcanic island you will notice both above and below the water. For example, you can dive the Champagne Reef where the bubbles rising from the volcanic soil will make you feel like you are swimming in a glass of champagne.
A trip to Dominica is not complete without a visit to Boiling Lake, the second largest boiling lake in the world, located in the telling Valley of Desolation. About 50 fumaroles (steam holes), hot springs, mud holes and sulfur springs hiss and bubble in this inhospitable valley, and the volcanic rocks are all the colors of the rainbow. The day hike there is strenuous, but you will be rewarded with unreal and unforgettable sensations.
