Rich and impressive

Learn about Guadeloupe's local history while visiting, for example, the ACTe memorial museum, dedicated to the memory and history of the slave trade. Explore La Route de l'esclave, part of UNESCO's slave route project, and discover Fort Delgrès, a 17th-century French fortress that guarded the city in earlier times. Immerse yourself in the sounds of the unique Ka drum, on the streets of Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe's largest city and also known as the New Orleans of the Caribbean, while admiring French colonial culture. During the months of January and February, carnival brings the archipelago to its fullest ecstasy, which manifests itself in parades and dance and song contests. There are celebrations everywhere, but most in Basse-Terre where, on Thick Tuesday, dressed dancers and musicians march through the streets to the beat of drums.
