Rock formations and powder sand
Sint Maarten is rich in 37 beaches divided between the bohemian French and the lively Dutch parts, with the raging waves of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea on the other. So whether you want to laze undisturbed in a secluded bay or prefer to brave the waves while doing water sports, the island has something for every sun worshipper.
The French side
Discover the long and peaceful beach of Baie Longue or Long Bay, where only the gently lapping waves break the silence. Trek to the golden powder sand of Plum Bay and marvel at the water in endless shades of blue. In calm weather you can snorkel here, when the swell is good it is a playground for surfers. Baie Rouge owes its name to the reddish hue of the sand and is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in St. Maarten. Between Baie Rouge and Pointe du Bluff is Devil's Hole, a natural deep opening in a rock in which the waves explode to the sky; an unforgettable sight!
Pinel Island or'Îlet de Pinel' is a small island off the northern coast of France. It is a nature reserve full of iguanas, land turtles and hermit crabs that is lined with the most beautiful beaches and coral-rich waters. At Yellow Beach and Karibuni, enjoy beach bars and restaurants known for their fresh seafood and lobster dishes. A little further on you will find the tranquility of a serene and paradisiacal beach.
Dutch beaches
On the calm southwest side, Cupecoy Beach is surrounded by rock formations and caves, and you'll find the golden Mullet and Simpson Bay beaches. If you want to gallop through the waves, plan a visit to Kim Sha Beach. Do this during sunset and linger until night falls and spontaneous parties and concerts occur. Surfers head to the secluded beaches of Guana Bay for unforgettable sessions on the epic swell. Snorkelers opt for the long wide sandy beach of Dawn Beach which is named for its phenomenal sunrises. You will swim from the shore to the most beautiful coral reefs, surrounded by exotic fish.
