Mythical and exotic
The peninsula Halkidki is located south of Thessaloniki and splits into foothills Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos .
The shape of Halkidiki is reminiscent of the trident of God Poseidon in mythology Greece . It is characterized by a great landscape diversity with long tropical sandy beaches, rugged mountains and unique caves.
Kassandra used to be called 'Flegra' which means 'fire pit'. According to local myth, the area was home to giants and became a battlefield when attempts were made to banish the gods from Mount Olympus. It offers beautiful beaches with clear blue waters and cosmopolitan beach bars in Paliouri and an impressive lighthouse marks the beach of Possidi . In July and August, Kassandra is a paradise for culture lovers with the annual festival full of dazzling concerts and theater performances.
If you are looking for unspoiled natural beauty then Sithonia is the best choice. Sithonia is made up of family-friendly beaches with plenty of caves to discover. Rent a boat or canoe and sail to the island Diaporos , located opposite the village Vourvourou. Here, discover the various secluded caves that are beautifully surrounded by pine trees and sandy beaches. It is located on a private bay and surrounded by natural forest. You can enjoy snorkeling in the crystal clear water at the many reefs.
Athos is an autonomous monk state with limited access. Excursions by boat along Athos depart daily from various seaside resorts. This offers a good alternative to view the many monasteries of the monks republic from a distance. Interesting monasteries are those of Agiou Dionisiou, Osiou Grigoriou, Simona Petras and Agiou Panteleimonos.
