Hiking, flowers and tradition
The island Madeira is known for its balmy eternal spring climate and, together with Porto Santo and the uninhabited islands of Ilhas Desertas and the Ilhas Selvagens, forms an autonomous region of Portugal . Madeira has a coastline with steep cliffs and the interior is formed by high peaks with Pico Ruive as the highest mountain. The Levadas (old irrigation canals) form a beautiful walking network and are framed by colorful exotic flowers and plants. The various botanical gardens also show the floral splendor for which the island is known. Many whales and dolphins swim around Madeira. The forests and mountains are the habitat of various bird species and the rocks are the habitat of small lizards.
Visit the historic center of the capital Funchal. Camacha is known for its wicker baskets and folklore. Enjoy gastronomic specialties while the cheerful dance music 'Bailinho da Madeira' is played.
