The Carpathians

Rugged mountain world

Flowery fields, endless dense forests and the wild highlands. On a dusty road, a farm family with horse-drawn carriages heads towards a small medieval castle town. Experience the wilderness and everyday, yet simple life in the remote parts of the Romanian Carpathian Carpathian. The mountain area the Carpathian Mountains consists of rugged nature where the mountains are wild and pristine. Crystal clear mountain rivers, birds of prey in hover flight, waterfalls, suddenly emerging fog, large caves, reservoirs and a huge rich and varied biodiversity. Brown bears live in the dense forests and have a chance to see wolves or lynx. It is the habitat of no less than 5000 bears and 3000 wolves! Large parts are protected, so twelve of the fourteen national parks in Romania are located in the Carpathian Areas.

Countless hairpin bends

There are some big mountain passes to be found. By far the most beautiful is the Transfăgărășa, with its highest point of 2134 meters the second highest mountain pass in Romania. The route winds through the highest mountains with countless hairpin bends and is the connection between the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachije. The spectacular 90-kilometre route, built by Dictator Ceausescu, is considered one of the most beautiful routes in Europe.
