Peace city
La Paz is situated at an altitude of 3660 meters with the snowy Illimani of 6402 meters in the background! The city was originally called Nuestra Señora de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace). On the rustic Plaza Murillo is the president's palace and the beautiful San Francisco church can be found on the Plaza San Francisco. The streetscape of La Paz is defined by the cholitas, the distinctive Bolivian Indian women with their beautifully embroidered pleated skirts (so-called polleras) and distinctive black bowler hats that offer their merchandise on the street. La Paz has an interesting archaeological museum and the Coca museum where you can discover how the coca plant is inextricably linked to Indian culture. The witch market where cholitas sell llamas and other offerings to mildly vote Pachamama, Mother Earth, is also worth a visit.
