Impenetrable rainforest
The Amazon rainspeedd is the largest rainforest on the earth and is spread over nine countries. The Amazon River runs through the rainforest, with no less than 1100 tributaries. Along the narrow creeks, Igarapés, still live the descendants of the Indians, Caboclos. The rainforest is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plant species, and nearly 2,000 species of birds and mammals. The diversity of plant species is the highest in the world. One in five of the world's birds lives in the rainforests of the Amazon.
Amazon city Manaus
About 1500 km from the mouth of the Amazon lies in the middle of the Manaus rainforest. About 15km from the centre of Manaus, the Rio Solimões and the Rio Negro merge to form the Amazon. This point is called the encounter of waters (Encontro das Águas). With the presence of the huge rivers, it's not so surprising that one of the most beautiful ways to see the Amazon is by boat. A cruise through the rainforest gives an extra dimension. From the water you can see the jungle passing by.
