Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal
The Arenal volcano belongs to the Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, which also includes the Chato volcano. Most of the national park is overgrown with cloud forest and rainforest, rich in plant and animal species, rivers, waterfalls and hot springs. The Arenal is a so-called stratovolcano (high cone-shaped volcano that is made up of layers of solidified lava) and is the youngest and most active volcano in Costa Rica. In the vicinity of the Arenal several hot springs are heated by the volcano. It has always been assumed that the Arenal was a dead volcano, but after sleeping for about four centuries it became active again on July 28, 1968. An earthquake shook this giant of 1633m. The ancient solidified lava of 1968 can be observed. At the moment there is no red lava to see. The volcano has been 'calm' in that respect for a while. Gas explosions, on the other hand, can be heard and heard.
