The capital of Costa Rica
San José is named after the local patron saint, located in the middle of the country at an altitude of 1170 meters. A third of the total population of Costa Rica (popularly called Ticos) lives in San José. After tobacco, the coffee industry also brought prosperity to the city and today it is the most cosmopolitan city in Central America. There are countless shopping malls and restaurants, lively markets and an exclusive nightlife. In addition, there are also colonial remains, of which the Teatro Nacional is a fine example, and several interesting museums. There is the Museo de Jade with the largest collection of jade in America and the Museo de Oro with a beautiful collection of pre-Columbian gold.
