Coffee plantations and volcanoes
The Valle Central is a plateau at an altitude of 800 to 1500 meters in central Costa Rica. Almost three quarters of the total population lives there and the capital San José is also located there. It is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, including the Poás, Barva, Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes. The Poás volcano is the most visited of these four and has two craters surrounded by lush forest. One with a diameter of 1.5 km with a lagoon that spits boiling sulfur gas and the other, called the Botos Lagoon, with a cold water lagoon connected to the Rio Angel.
The fertile soil and weather make the valley suitable for agriculture, including potato, cassava and coffee. It is even one of the world's most important coffee areas. In the Valle Central you will also find waterfalls, active volcanoes, hot water springs, and beautifully located coffee farms.
