Otavalo market
Surrounded by high volcanoes such as the Cayambe (5790 m). The Cotacachi (4939 m) and the sacred Imbabura (4609 m) the colourful city of Otavalo is 2500 metres away. The city is best known for the markets where cattle, handicrafts, leather work, carvings and textiles are sold. These markets go back to pre-Inca times and the Otavaleños (inhabitants of Otavalo) are internationally known for their weaving and craftsmanship. Nearby is the beautiful crater lake Cuicocha.
Lower down are, on the flanks of the volcanoes, two special nature reserves with cloud forest. The Mindo and Mashpi national parks have a specific flora from bromeliads to many orchid species, more than 500 bird species and many butterflies. Also bigger game as monkeys and cougars have their home in these unique areas.
In the northern Andes area is also one of the most special and oldest haciendas in South America. Staying on the very authentic and still working
hacienda Zuleta
is an experience to remember.
