Copán, important hangout on the Mayan route
The Mayans lived in an area that now consists of southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and western Honduras. The ancient Mayan city of Copán lies just across the border from Guatemala in the green hills of Honduras. Together with Tikal, Chitchen Itza and Palenque, it is considered an important place in the ancient Mayan empire. In its heyday it had a population of more than 20,000 inhabitants, many times more than the current colonial village now suggests. Much has been preserved of this ancient city and this archaeological site is especially praised for its beautiful detailed structures, inscriptions and decorations. It should not be missed on the famous Mayan route.
