Historic city with colorful Spanish-colonial architecture
Granada is one of Central America's most beautiful cities, with a rich historical past with heyday alternating with extremely troubled times. Founded in 1524, Granada is characterized by its Spanish-colonial, brightly colored architecture. Its location on Lake Nicaragua made the city a strategically located, thriving trading post, where lumber, gold and silver were traded, among other things. Over the centuries, the city experienced many attacks by English, Dutch and French pirates, and the Americans also made an attempt to capture the city. The brightly colored Spanish-colonial architecture and the old fort recall that past, but the city's atmosphere is now relaxed and authentically Nicaraguan. It is a wonderful city to explore on foot or take a tour by horse and carriage. You will see monumental buildings, small houses and boutiques with colorful facades, terraces, parks and boulevards, markets and street vendors. Life mainly takes place on the streets, there is always entertainment and very good restaurants.
On the shores of Lake Nicaragua
Its location on the shore of the great Lake Nicaragua makes Granada an excellent starting point for excursions or multi-day trips in the area. For example, go by boat to Isla de Ometepe and the Isletas de Granada. Hikers can enjoy the flanks of the Mombacho volcano. Walk through rainforests and visit a coffee plantation, and look out over the caldera from the crater rim. Very special is a night excursion to the active volcano Masaya. Seeing this volcano is always impressive, as from the crater rim you can see the thick smoke and swirling magma. At night, however, you will see the glowing lava in all its glory: white hot and deep red, bubbling and blowing smoke. A phenomenal natural spectacle Where the world can't find you....
