The pure and authentic south
Those who are adventurous and enterprising, curious for a pure experience, travel to the southernmost corner of Lake Nicaragua. Islas Solentiname are a cluster of 36 pristine islands covered with tropical rainforest. The largest islands are inhabited, but the villages are simple and authentic, stripped of great comforts. Explore the particularly rich flora and fauna by kayak or on a boat tour, and look for hummingbirds, large butterflies, amphibians and freshwater sharks.
Unique nature reserve on the border with Costa Rica
Not much further on is the entrance to the Rio San Juan River, a well-preserved natural treasure with enormous biodiversity and abundant wildlife. On a boat trip, you may see caimans, river turtles and manatees. More than 380 bird species inhabit the area including the Green macaw, the Harpy eagle and the Crested eagle. In the historic town of El Castillo, you will hear stories of pirates and buccaneers; it feels like the end of the world. The river continues to flow and is one of the main veins of the beautiful Indio Maíz Biospere Reserve. The deeper you penetrate into this area, the greater your chances of observing rich wildlife, such as the jaguar, tapir, spider monkey, howler monkey and ocelot.
