Cuzco
Follow in the footsteps of the Incas and admire the ancient Inca capital; Cuzco is undisputedly one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America. Stroll through the picturesque alleys past baroque churches and atmospheric squares. The vibrant heart is formed by the impressive Plaza de Armas. In the historic centre with its Spanish colonial houses - mostly built on the foundations of former Inca palaces - you can taste the authentic Indian atmosphere. Cuzco is not only the starting point for a visit to the famous Machu Picchu, nearby are also some impressive Incasites. Tambo Machay, a sanctuary where the water was revered and Sacsaywaman, an imposing fortress with stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains, are well worth a visit.
Machu Picchu
Tucked between the high peaks of the Andes lie the majestic ruins of the sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu. Enclosed between steep mountain peaks it remained undiscovered by the Spaniards. The steep path to the mysterious site is still intact and can still be walked today via the spectacular, strenuous Inca Trail. There are several theories about the function of the city, but the most plausible is that it was a country retreat for kings and other high-ranking people. A visit to the highlight of South America will stay with you for a lifetime!
