Inca ruins and colorful Indians
The Sacred Valley, in the Inca period one of the most important valleys, is more than worth a visit. In the rio urubamba catchment area, the river that was sacred to the Incas, authentic Indian villages such as Chinchero and Ollantaytamboare located on the way from Cuzco to Machu Picchu. The locals honour the ancient traditions and still work the fields with foot ploughs. Spectacular are the terraces in Maras where salt extraction has been done since the Inca time. The ponchos of the Indians form a beautiful colour contrast with the dazzling white salt pans and the snowy peaks of the Andes in the background. The colonial town of Pisac is dominated by one of the most beautifully located Inca sites with the largest agricultural terraces the Incas ever designed.
