The nursery of Suriname
Near Nickerie is the Bigi Pannature reserve, known for its exceptional flora and fauna. Bigi Pan is a wetland and is officially a special management area. It stretches along the coast of the districts of Coronie and Nickerie and is 67,000 hectares in size. This area has beautiful nature with a lot of mangrove and already 122 species of coastal birds have been counted, of which 72 occur all year year. There are many special birds such as the flamingo and the red ibis. These birds also breed in this area and it is called the nursery.
