Mate and asado
One of the smallest countries in South America is Uruguay , the hidden gem between Brazil and Argentina . The interior consists of rolling green plains with lots of forests and rivers, which forms an interesting combination with the enormous long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where you will find many chic resorts.
Capital Montevideo , 'the Switzerland of America' is a must see with its shopping streets, markets and historic buildings. The well-known Casapuebla near Punta del Este is also a real attraction. Colonia is short for Colonia del Sacramento , the name says it all, a beautiful colonial town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Particularly striking are the many old-timers that drive through the streets with "cobblestones". In the old fishing villages of José Ignacio and Punto del Diablo you will meet the friendly locals. These original fishing villages have been transformed into seaside resorts for the upper class with beautiful beaches and fantastic seafood restaurants. Playa La Pedrera is a coastal town that is popular with artists and surfers, among others.
And for a wildlife experience, take the 4x4 to Cabo Polonia , a village without running water or electricity, where you will come face to face with wild horses and sea lions overlooking endless sandy beaches and dunes.
A self-drive is the ideal way of traveling here, combined with a stay at atmospheric estancias where you will be welcomed. Crossing Uruguay by car will only take you five hours.
