Steep slopes, angular mountains and oases
The road adapts, because the mountains are in control. And so the road through the Al Hajar mountains has many twists and turns, sometimes narrow, to wring itself between two boulders. But to truly feel the power of the mountains, you must leave this road. Off-road over the Wadi Bani Auff, the route that does not move with the mountains, but crosses them right through. For true adventurers, not afraid of steep slopes or ravines, however, there are many more routes to admire the Hajar.
If you look closely, you will see the soft side of this rugged landscape. Angular mountains are interspersed with small wadis, oases in the valley. Via Wadi Shab to Wadi Tiwi, from where a small stream finds its way: between the mountains, through the ravine towards the sea. Along the way, this stream passes old traditional mountain villages like Harat Bidah. The old irrigation system also zigzags through the mountains, is visible everywhere and is connected to the small mountain stream. Where this stream does not come is at the highest peak of the mountains: the Jebel Shams, of three thousand meters high. But travellers with some perseverance know how to control this summit. And enjoy the mighty views over the peaks of the Al Hajar.
