Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve
The beaches at Ras Al Jinz are one of the main breeding grounds of the critically endangered green sea turtle. Besides the green sea turtle, three other species live in this protected area: the Olive Ridley turtle, the spurious hawksbill turtle and the also endangered hawksbill turtle. During the period from May to September, you are most likely to see especially the green sea turtle at Ras Al Jinz, when they come ashore to lay their eggs. After dark, the females emerge from the ocean in large numbers, looking for a safe place in the sand to lay dozens of eggs. An average of 55 days later, the first turtles are born, struggling quickly toward the sea in the dark. The research center in the fishing village is happy to take visitors to the beaches to demonstrate this impressive natural phenomenon.
Masirah
Charmed by the turtle? Then the island of Masirah is a veritable Valhalla. On this desolate island just off the coast, all four different sea turtle species breed. Because they have several breeding seasons, they can be found here throughout the year. Those who are very quiet can hear the murmur of their flippers in the sand.
